Stay motivated – 6 tips for Entrepreneurs

Working for yourself. No one to answer to. Independent living. Working from anywhere in the world. Sounds amazing right? And life as a digital nomad and entrepreneur definitely has it’s serious benefits. But staying motivated to work online while your travelling the world and planning your next bucket list idea can difficult. But here are some tips to help keep you motivated so that you can work and enjoy the nomadic life simultaneously.

1) Up and at em’

Waking up early sucks, but we do it because we have motivation – the motivation to keep our job, the motivation to avoid listening to a lecture from our boss. But when we work for ourselves and become our own boss, it can be difficult to motivate ourselves to wake up early. But when it comes to rocking the digital nomad/entrepreneurial life, routine is going to be your best friend. If you have trouble waking up in the morning, just force yourself to do it for one month – soon it will become a habit.

P.S. don’t just wake up early to wake up early. Get your work done. The beginning of your day will be when you are most motivated, and the sooner you get your work out of the way the more time you will have for play.

2) Make a Plan

Any successful business owner will tell you that “if you fail to plan you have already planned to fail”. Planning is the key to success. And when planning, be specific about your goals. How much money do you need to make each day to support your nomadic lifestyle? How many hours of work do you need to put in to make that money? Once you know what your goals are, set yourself a schedule and stick to it. Without a schedule it is easy to become sidetracked, but setting your own will help to keep you motivated to complete your goals.

3) Keep a journal

You never know when inspiration will strike. And when it does, you don’t want to lose it. Keep a journal handy at all times to keep track of all your ideas. Oh, and don’t forget to keep all of your work on backup! You never know when disaster could strike, especially when working on a computer. So be safe and keep duplicates.

4) Dress for success

This may sound crazy, but the way you dress has a huge impact on the way you feel. If you start working in your pyjamas, you may feel sleepy and lose motivation to work. But if you wake up, get refreshed, and hop into your best attire – well then you’re ready to work. To make our point, have you ever heard of the “power tie”? Well, turns out that its a real thing! According to a study published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, those who dressed up felt more powerful and in control than those who dressed down. So even if you are having a home day, you still need to dress for success.

5) Stay focused

Ding. Ding. Ding. You know what that’s the sound of? Your social media notifications going off every 30 seconds. If you want to succeed, turn them off. In fact, turn off your phone and social media altogether. Unless you are dealing with clientele, you don’t need to respond right away. Finish your task or goal and then check your phone.

6) Reward yourself

Remember, as a digital nomad the whole goal is freedom. Forcing yourself to work all day everyday is eventually going to force you to give up. It’s okay to work hard, but it’s okay to play hard too. Finish your work for the day and then reward yourself with something you enjoy.

The lifestyle of an entrepreneur and digital nomad can be extremely rewarding, but being your own boss can make it difficult to stay motivated. Follow the few tips above to help you stay on your journey to success, while at the same time enjoying everything life has to offer.
